The Santa Barbara School of Squash (SBSOS) is an after-school program for low-income kids in Santa Barbara. We combine the sport of squash with academics, community service, cultural outings and tournaments. We are hosted by the Santa Barbara Athletic Club, the SB YMCA and the Davis Rec Center at the corner of De la Vina and W. Victoria Street.

SBSOS currently has 33 students in the program. We are a small organization but we go a mile deep with each student. Our mission is that all our students be college bound or that they have a good plan in place for their future. We are not a drop-in program and we are year around. We have a lot of our students' time and we work to provide them with opportunities to reach their potential.

SBSOS is part of a national organization, National Urban Squash & Education Association (NUSEA), and as such we are required to follow best practices set forth by NUSEA. Each studentn in the program must complet 100 hours of academics, 100 hours of squash instruction and a minimum of 15 hours of community service. We also have enrichment and cultural outings, hikes, fun outings, etc.

We are looking for individuals that are available to help chaperone service projects and outings. We have a number of volunteers but always need more. If you enjoy being an important part of the lives of children - this is a fantastic opportunity to flex your volunteer muscles!

If you are interested, please contact Debbie Brown: (805) 570-9970 or e-mail Debbie@SBSOS.org.

For more information please visit our website at SBSOS.org. To see our parent organization and what these programs are doing across the country, see website http://www.nationalurbansquash.org/index.htm.

Thank you!

Mission Statement

To help underserved students succeed in life through squash, education, and mentoring.

Description

SBSOS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit year-round sports and education program serving committed Santa Barbara youth (5 th-12 th grade) who qualify for the National School Lunch program. SBSOS pillars include squash/exercise, academic tutoring, community service, enrichment opportunities, and mentoring. We operate after school, on weekends, and during holidays. By using squash as a motivator, we guide students to realize their academic, athletic and personal potential. Our goal is for each student to graduate from high school prepared for their next step: college or to launch a career. We stay in contact with graduates as they work toward their post-high school goals and offer guidance and support through age 25. We are closely involved with each student on many levels and describe the program as "an inch wide but a mile deep".
