Our vision is that all children achieve success in life

Every volunteer mentor (or Big) is matched one-to-one with a 6-17 year old child (or Little) in the community. Matches get together 8-12 hours a month and spend time doing things they both enjoy. It's up to each match to decide when to get together and what they want to do. Some matches enjoy riding bikes, hiking, collecting seashells at the beach, baking cookies, running in marathons, playing video games, skateboarding, knitting and much more. Every match is supported by a Match Support Specialist to help ensure that relationships are healthy and beneficial to youth and provide the mentor with a rewarding experience. They can also provide ideas for activities, conflict resolution, and general support for the matches.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide children facing emotional, social, personal and/or academic adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Description

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the North Coast, a non-profit affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, has served over 3,000 children in Humboldt County since its founding in 1969. We connect fun, positive adults and responsible high school students one-to-one with children and teens in community-based and school-based mentoring programs. The children in our programs come from low-income, single-parent homes or homes where one or more parents is incarcerated. It is our belief that building a trusting friendship between a child and a mentor can make a powerful impact in their life.
