The YMCA Reach and Rise (formerly Building Futures) Mentoring Program provides the most comprehensive training of any mentoring program in the Bay Area, preparing mentors to work successfully with at-risk youth by developing relationship-building skills, exploring issues facing at-risk youth, and strategies to handle difficult situations. Free of cost to families, trained mentors work to understand cultural and social development, mental health issues, risk factors, and offer ways to communicate and relate to youth.
If you had a special person in your life that guided, nurtured, supported and taught you that you mattered, you had a mentor. Now it's your turn!
Mentors spend 1 to 3 hours a week with youth participants for the duration of 1 year. Together they have fun while creating lasting memories and participate in activities at the YMCA and in the community.
A Reach and Rise mentor is a friend, counselor, role model, supporter and guide that listens, supports and shares with a young person.
Youth today experience overwhelming challenges and with the support of a caring, consistent adult mentor they can thrive and manifest their potential!

Description
Reach and Rise (formerly Building Futures) Mentoring is a program created to address the mental health counseling needs of youth. The Building Futures Mentoring Program provides 1-to-1 mentoring to at-risk youth ages 6 - 18 in San Francisco, Marin, San Mateo and Oakland. Mentors meet with their mentees once each week for an average of 2 hours over a 1-year period. We help children develop tools to cope with issues such as low self-esteem, family and peer conflicts, academic underachievement and decision-making skills. Youth are referred from schools and other YMCA programs The YMCA mentoring program is geared for kids 6-14 and focuses on outcomes such as improving academic performance, personal social skills and relationships with authority figures.
Highly trained mentors meet weekly with mentees to discuss issues occurring in the youth's life. A key feature of the program is the inclusion of parents in the mentoring process, from matching their child to an appropriate mentor, to setting goals for the mentoring relationship.
