AseraCare Hospice

Volunteers with a strong sense of compassion are sought in all parts of Houston and surrounding areas to help meet the following needs of terminally ill patients in hospice care:

Patient Support - Spend time with patients by reading, sharing music, stories, holding a hand, discussing worldly events, and just offering tender companionship.

Family Support- Help families by spending time with the patient so the family caregivers can take a nap, go grocery shopping, get a hair cut, attend church services, or anything else they can’t find time to do otherwise. Or run errands for them, make phone calls to them to see how they are, and become a trusted friend with a listening ear. You can also help with light housekeeping chores.

Pet Therapy - Visit patients with your loving, kind, gentle-natured pet to and spend time sharing your pet’s company.

Cosmetology - Help paint patients’ fingernails, comb and fix their hair, and give hand and foot massages.

Vigil Visits - Sit with patients while in the active dying stage so they don't have to die alone. Pray with them and family members, read to them, and sing to them. Make phone calls for family members when a patient passes on to relieve the family.

Administrative/Office - Help out with filing, faxing, packets, phone calls, updating volunteer files, updating newsletter to volunteers, and mail outs.

Bereavement - Assist the bereavement coordinator and help with phone calls, patient/family visits, mail outs, and updating files.

Tuck-In Calls - Come into the office and call each family/patient to make sure they have everything they need for the weekend (supplies, medications, equipment, and any other issues that need to be addressed).

Public Relations - Help educate the community about hospice care and the benefits hospice has to offer by attending community events and handing out literature in area hospitals, nursing facilities, personal care homes, colleges and universities, and churches.

If you are a surviving family member, we encourage you to wait a minimum of 1 year following the patent's death to serve as a direct care volunteer or in the public relations activities.
