SHELTER PROGRAM: Bilingual Spanish/English-speaking Life Skills Support Person
Location: YWCA Support Network Program’s Shelter, Santa Clara County - Confidential location.
Purpose: To provide Spanish-speaking and other Shelter residents with guidance and assistance in developing essential life skills to enhance individual empowerment, self-sufficiency, independence and personal health/well-being.
Major Responsibilities:
- As requested by Family Care Managers, support Spanish-speaking and other Shelter residents through conversation, instruction and/or written information in the development of essential life skills in any of the following areas, based on personal knowledge base and comfort level: employment, education, money management, time-management, meal-planning, parenting, networking, transportation, health and self-care, housing, self-management, negotiation/conflict management, daily living, healthy relationships, communication, decision-making, stress-management, relaxation techniques, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Consult with each Shelter resident’s Family Care Manager before and after providing guidance and assistance to share information on session goals and outcomes and complete any required documentation.
- Mandatory: Report any known or suspected instance of child abuse and/or neglect to a YWCA Support Network Program employee.
Required Qualifications:
- Fluency in Spanish and English
- One or more years of personal or professional, paid or unpaid experience in at least three of the essential life skills listed above.
- Strong interest in empowering victims to live free of domestic violence.
- High level of emotional maturity and empathy, and a nurturing personality.
- Ability to work with and support individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Flexible nature - essential to working in the changing and unpredictable environment of the Shelter.
- Mandatory: Report any known or suspected instance of child abuse and/or neglect to a YWCA Support Network Program employee.
Preferred (but not essential) Qualifications:
- Knowledge and understanding of the diverse Latino/Latina cultures.

Training Required:
- Completion of the YWCA Support Network Program’s 40-hour Domestic Violence Counselor Training
- Completion of the YWCA Support Network Program’s 1.5-hour Shelter Program Component Training
Time Commitment: Volunteer 3 hours per week, or more, between any of the following times:
Daytimes:
Monday or Wednesday: 10:00am - 6:00pm
Tuesday: 8:30am - 6:00pm
Thursdays: 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Fridays: 10:00am - 2:00pm
Evenings:
Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday: 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Weekends:
Saturday or Sunday: 1:00pm-5:00pm
Required commitment: Minimum of 100 hours of service (post-training)

YWCA Domestic Violence Department, Support Network Program offers individuals and families experiencing domestic violence a range of free/low-cost confidential services in English and Spanish, including a 24-hour toll-free helpline (1-800-572-2782), emergency shelter, counseling, therapy, legal services, victim advocacy, and programs for children/teens. With your support we can empower our diverse community to live free of domestic violence!
