Donate, Prepare and Serve Dinner for Domestic Violence Shelter Residents on Monday Evenings

The Monday Night Dinner Volunteer offers a much needed break to our DV Emergency Shelter residents by donating, preparing and serving dinner on Monday evenings. This volunteer can do this alone, or with the help of their friends, family or colleagues that they recruit to help. This opportunity is essential for creating a welcoming atmosphere for our clients, and their children, fleeing abuse. It is a great way to serve in an informal, friendly atmosphere. The next dates we need help are January 26th and February 23rd.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Plan out, prepare, deliver and serve dinner to 35 adults and children
    • This includes providing any paper goods (plates, bowls, napkins, cups, utensils) required for serving your meal.
  • Submit a criminal history background check for each person that will be on site (at least one week before the date you are serving). Those with felonies, crimes against a person, or crimes of ethics should self-select out of this opportunity.
  • Following the evening timeline:
    • 4pm - Volunteers arrive for orientation, then set up the meal they've purchased and prepared.
    • 5pm - Clients arrive and dinner begins
    • 5:30pm - Dinner ends, clients thank volunteers, and clean up begins
    • 5:35pm - All dinner items have been removed from Sunshine Hall
    • 6pm or earlier - All left overs and supplies have been put away, and kitchen cleaned

Qualifications

  • Commitment to eliminating racism, empowering women, and supporting survivors of abuse
  • Ability to organize a group (no larger than 6 people) to come together to make and serve dinner for 35, or
  • All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older and pass a criminal history background check
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of issues faced by domestic violence survivors
  • A compassionate, non-judgmental, proactive attitude
  • Strictly adhering to the confidentiality and safety needs of clients

Commitment

This opportunity requires a one-time only commitment to the date selected. However, we do hope that you consider coming back again to serve on a regular basis.

Position Benefits

The Monday Night Dinner Volunteers will hopefully gain the satisfaction of contributing to programs that make a difference in the community and supporting survivors of intimate partner violence and their children.

Supervision

This position will be supervised directly by the Volunteer and Resource Manager.
