Greetings from South Africa
These are two of the 500 South African artists with whom we work. They are lifting themselves out of poverty through their remarkable beadwork. Art Aids Art is building a community center in Khayelitsha to provide them with additional support.

Be part of a small, active international organization that is doing big things, a unique program combining the service of a nonprofit with the entrepreneurship of a small business. Art Aids Art promotes education, wellbeing and sustainable economic development, working primarily with South African women and children impacted by poverty and/or HIV/AIDS. We are the first American organization to open an art & education center in South Africa's largest township, Khayelitsha. For more information, visit www.artaidsart.org. Art Aids Art seeks an Intern to assist with and lead daily projects, both large and small. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: online social networking, public relations and Fair Trade sales at community events, office management, photography, documentation and inventorying of South African art and handcrafts, educational research, curriculum development, and assorted nonprofit administration and data entry duties. The Intern will gain valuable experience dealing with a range of tasks involving the workings of a nonprofit organization. This part-time internship will be a great opportunity for anyone interested in social justice, social entrepreneurship, women, children, Africa, HIV/AIDS, literacy, education, the arts, fair trade microbusiness development and/or non-profit management. We seek an organized, detail-oriented, responsible, and energetic self-starter with strong interpersonal skills. In exchange for your contribution of time and energy, we offer a unique environment with a mix of structure and autonomy. Some work will be at our office in Altadena, so access to a car is preferable, but other assignments will allow for online research at home. A part-time stipend is included. A minimum commitment from September, 2017 to June, 20178is needed, however the job could possibly begin earlier depending on program needs and intern availability over the summer of 2017.

Mission Statement

Art Aids Art, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, promotes education and sustainable economic development through the arts.

Description

Founded in 2003 by educators and human service professionals, Art Aids Art serves South African women and children through programs in impoverished townships surrounding Cape Town. With our U.S. office based in Altadena, California, Art Aids Art's American activities focus on educating the public about South African culture and the HIV/AIDS crisis through presentations at schools, community centers and private home gatherings. Each year, the organization leads an intergenerational group of volunteers to Cape Town, home of our South African headquarters, to provide services through our own programs and in collaboration with participating South African organizations. In addition, Art Aids Art stimulates economic opportunity for South African artist collectives, purchasing artwork at Fair Trade prices and exhibiting it in the United States. Income from American art sales is reinvested into our projects in Cape Town. In this regard, working with Art Aids Art provides a unique experience of working with a nonprofit that also works like a small business. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Because of our small size and wide range of activities, we offer a wide variety of activities for volunteers, including: -staffing our public events, including interacting with the public, setting up displays, and providing information about our programs. -assisting us with a variety of art documentation, including: digital photo editing and graphic design, review and data entry of storytelling interviews, organization of photographs and art materials, assisting with intake and inventorying of handcrafts from Africa, etc.
