Books for Babies Volunteer

A unique feature of our program is the in-hospital visit from a Books for Babies volunteer. To help all families get started, volunteers who have been trained by our program visit with parents on maternity units to introduce Read to Grow and to talk about the "how and why" of reading aloud to babies. After a brief training period, we like to have volunteers commit to 3-4 hours per week or every other week. Volunteers sit with families for 5-15 minutes talking about the importance of reading to their child from birth as a way to help with bonding, brain development and to put the child on a path to school readiness. Families will receive a literacy packet and the volunteer will review the materials with the family. This is a great volunteer job for any adult over 22.
