The Newport News Department of Human Services is seeking volunteers for our Adult Services Companion Program. Volunteers are matched with a senior citizen in need of support by visiting with the senior once per week to provide companionship. Volunteers may also run errands such as light grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions and transporting to/from doctor's appointments.
Volunteers are needed during office hours Monday - Friday only between 8 AM - 5 PM. Time commitment is suited to volunteers schedule, with an average of 3-5 hours per week. Volunteers must have a valid driver's license, pass city driving certification and will use city cars for travel.
Volunteers must have a genuine interest in helping others and assisting senior citizens.

Description
Volunteer Services Program - The goal of the Volunteer Services Program is to expand the services and capabilities of the Department of Social Services by utilizing the skills and efforts of volunteers to provide direct services, administrative services, and clerical services.
The Department relies on volunteers to:
- Enrich and extend the routine services being offered
- Supplement the work of the staff
- Perform a direct service to our clients
- Serve as a liaison between the community and the Department
- Afford the citizens of Newport News the opportunity to affect the environment in which they live
