Volunteers are literally, the heart of Harbor Hospice, providing a special kind of caring and compassion for our patients and their families. Every day, our volunteers make a difference in the lives of people. Whether they offer a listening ear to patients and families, assist with daily household activities for patients, provide grief support, serve as a companion to loved ones or share their personal expertise to help promote hospice care, the time given to Harbor Hospice families by our volunteers can be the most rewarding experiences of their lives. Please know that most of the activities occur at the patients home--whether that be a nursing home or the patients home.

It takes a very special, caring person to give of themselves as unselfishly as our Harbor Hospice patient care volunteers. If you'd like to be a part of the Harbor Hospice team, here are some examples of the activities you can assist with:
· reading to a patient, or holding a hand
· staying with a patient while family members take a needed break or keep an appointment
· shopping or doing errands for a patient
· listening
· helping patients write or tell their life stories
· cooking, light household chores
· providing help with makeup and hair
· working on crafts or other projects

Mission Statement

We believe professionally managed Hospice care provides continuity of care and allows earlier hospital discharge and promotes patient dignity. We believe in the basic right of all patients to competent nursing care. Much can be accomplished medically, physically, psychologically and socially to enable patients to lead more comfortable and functional lives. A care plan is written especially for you by our nurses and therapists, in conference with your physician. Each paitent's situation is unique-many of the problems, coping strategies and emotions are not. Our specialized experience can help patients and their families to accept reality, learn to effectively deal with problems and frustrations, and maintain personal motivation and hope.

Description

Harbor Hospice provides 24-hour palliative care to those nearing the end of life's journey. We strive to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of patients and family members who share the experience of terminal illness.

Harbor Hospice is devoted to giving each family a gift when they need it most...quality of life for our patients when they are facing life's greatest challenge.

Hospice care enables patients to be surrounded by, and supported by, their families and friends, and it allows patients to approach end of life with dignity and peace.
