The West Philadelphia Alliance for Children ("WePAC") is looking for volunteers to help staff and operate public school elementary school libraries during the 2014-2015 school year. Absolutely no prior library experience is needed! Volunteers read to children, help them select and check out books, and support the schools' literacy program. WePAC provides library services to schools that are without any library services, or that have limited services. This year, no Philadelphia elementary schools have full-time, staffed librarians. Since 2009, WePAC has opened 17 closed school libraries and currently operates 12 with the help of our volunteers. This year, WePAC is looking to add additional schools and to staff existing libraries for increased hours. We will be holding several orientations this summer in preparation for the 2014-2015 school year. Check our info at www.wepac.org Volunteers primarily visit our schools on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during normal school hours. We are flexible in the amount of hours per day or week that you have available and can usually find a place for you in our growing number of libraries. Volunteers work as part of a team in each library during school hours. Volunteers must be willing to complete both child abuse and criminal background checks. The time commitment can be as little as two hours each week.
