Purpose: To help an individual learn to read, write, understand and speak English, gain citizenship, learn computer skills, or obtain a GED diploma. Volunteers also needed to help with an after school homework club for youth.
Place of Work: Meeting locations are flexible; however, volunteers are strongly encouraged to use SERRC/TLC facilities and materials. When SERRC/TLC facilities are closed, tutors and students should meet in a public facility such as the library.
Hours: The length of meetings is flexible. Volunteers should allow at least one hour each week for preparation.
Duties:
Meet with student partner each week and implement lessons
Report both you and your student's hours
Attend training, support sessions, recognition ceremonies
Confer with Volunteer Literacy Coordinator for instructional guidance and support

Description
The Learning Connection helps people build a better life through education by providing FREE GED and Adult Education Services, Computer Training, Family Education Programs, and Job Assistance Programs at two locations throughout Alaska's Capital City and in communities throughout Southeast Alaska.
Services include:
- Free GED and Adult Education Services
- Instruction in reading, writing, and math
- GED preparation and testing
- English as a Second Language and citizenship preparation
- Resume writing
- Job readiness training
- Computer Training
- Beginning computer classes
- Job training
- Family Education Programs
- Family literacy activities
- Toddler and preschool programs
- In-school support for elementary school-age children
- After school homework clubs
- Job Assistance Programs
- Youth Employment Services (YESS!), education, paid internships, and job search assistance for youth ages 16-21
- Mature Alaskans Seeking Job Skills Training (MASST), paid job training and placement assistance for seniors 55 and older
- JobX, helps youth 16-24 get a job, learn skills to keep a job and get placed in a variety of work sites in Juneau.
