Open Door Family Medical Centers, Ossining Site

Reading volunteers are needed to read with young children at Open Door Family Medical Centers.

Join Open Door Family Medical Centers' team of dedicated reading volunteers. At Open Door we feel that early literacy is part of a healthy childhood!

Open Door participates in a national literacy program for children designed to take place in medical offices called Reach Out and Read. Please take a look at their website: reachoutandread.org. We have expanded the model into our waiting areas. We feel that every day is an opportunity for literacy for the young patients we serve.

Volunteer readers read aloud to children from toddlers up to 7 years old and help them select a book to take home. They also model reading techniques for the parent/caregiver and talk about the importance of reading aloud to their children.

This is a great, flexible volunteer opportunity. A shift is 1 1/2 hours or more and can be scheduled as often as desired or as little as once per month at our Ossining, Port Chester, Sleepy Hollow or Mt. Kisco locations. Please look at our website for the location closest to you: opendoormedical.org.

Please help Open Door build a literacy rich waiting environment for the children. You will be rewarded with many smiles and knowing that you are helping a child to succeed better in school and in life.

Interested candidates will first come in for a Reach Out and Read Trial to see if this is a good fit for you and Open Door. Following the ROR trial, all volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application, provide reference, attend a short orientation and provide medical information required per NYS law.
