Albany Barn has a volunteer opportunity for just about everyone, whether you have an hour a month or 30 hours a week! Below is a brief description of the kinds of opportunities we have available. Please contact Kristen Holler (Kristen@albanybarn.org ) for more information or to sign up for one of these opportunities!
A volunteer orientation will be available prior to all events and gallery hours to ensure our staff have the most up-to-date information about Albany Barn.
Gallery Staff/Docents
Albany Barn frequently hosts events at Stage 1, our storefront gallery, and features new exhibits every month. Gallery Staff are usually responsible for assisting in set-up/breakdown as needed (especially for opening night receptions and artists' installations), and staffing the desk during gallery hours. Volunteers will also be answering questions about Albany Barn, selling art work, data entry, fling, social media/web content updates and other clerical support as needed, and promoting current initiatives of Albany Barn.
Event Staff
Albany Barn participates in a variety of events both in house at Stage 1 and The Barn and around the city and Capital Region! We are always looking for energetic, outgoing people to help spread the word about the Barn at these events! The time commitment for events is generally small, consisting of flexible 1--3 hour shifts. Event Staff are usually responsible for answering questions about Albany Barn, assisting in set-up/breakdown as needed, and helping ensure an exceptional experience for all of our guests!
Internships
Albany Barn, Inc is currently recruiting interns for the fall and spring semesters. Internships are offered to students enrolled in a a program for which they can receive credit or recent graduates looking to increase their professional experience. A major benefit to being an intern at Albany Barn is that we are not compartmentalized. Interns will participate in strategic development, community organizing, project management, marketing and PR, fundraising and more. Students will work directly with the many successful, accomplished professionals who comprise the Albany Barn board of directors. Specific internship areas include: Marketing Communications, Business Administration, Gallery Management, and Arts Education.
Working Teams
Each of our working teams is chaired by a member of our Board of Directors and will work on more focused tasks related to the strategic plan of Albany Barn:
Internal Affairs: Internal Affairs encompasses staff and volunteer development, finance, facilities and program planning. This team meets the 2nd Monday of each month and is responsible for reviewing program and event proposals, making recommendations for facilities improvements, equipment or service purchasing, and tenant and customer relations.
Extrenal Affairs encompasses community outreach, fund development/annual campaign, marketing communications, and event planning. This team is responsible for planning our annual Fusion 'anti-gala' guiding organizational fund development planning, and marketing planning and initiatives. External affairs has regular sub committee meetings for Fusion planning January-October.

Description
Albany Barn, Inc is a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to creating a permanent, sustainable creative arts incubator and neighborhood art space in Albany, New York.
Five years ago, stakeholders in the imperiled inner city neighborhood of Arbor Hill, developed a revitalization strategy called the Arbor Hill Neighborhood Plan. It was heralded as a breakthrough in collaborative community planning and continues to enjoy broad support during its implementation. As part of that Plan, it was recommended that one of the top priorities be the adaptive reuse of the abandoned St. Joseph¹s Academy building, located in the heart of the neighborhood.
Albany Barn has partnered with the City of Albany and Albany Housing Authority to redevelop St. Joseph's. The project is formally called Academy Lofts, although it is better known locally as The Barn. This name originates from the age-old practice of barn raising, when many rally on behalf of a fellow community member to build a structure vital to his or her livelihood.
This project will rehabilitate the 40,000+ square foot structure into 25 low cost loft-style live-work residences and ground level commercial art facilities, including work studios, rehearsal suites, performance & exhibition space, a public darkroom, digital media lab, and more.
This facility will be made available to local artists, musicians, writers, filmmakers and performers seeking an engaging, supportive environment in which to create and share their work, particularly those who cannot afford or otherwise obtain such space. Exhibits, performances and activities will be open to the public and audiences of all ages.
In 2010, Albany Barn moved into a new storefront headquarters at 46-48 North Swan Street. Aptly named Stage 1, the space is located approximately one block from St. Joseph's. In addition to office and meeting space, Albany Barn will utilize Stage 1 to create a persistent, dynamic visual arts presence, provide in-house arts programming and host other creative arts groups.
