Reach Out and Read encourages parents to read to their children by distributing brand-new children's books free of charge at every well-child visit from 6 months to five years of age. As a volunteer reader, you will read to young children in pediatric waiting room to aid in the development of language skills.

Reach Out and Read makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud and to give books to children at pediatric check-ups from six months to five years of age, with a special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading.
In November, 2001, Dr. William Bryson-Brockmann established a Reach Out and Read program in Winthrop-University Hospital's Department of Pediatrics. Within six months, two groups of pediatric residents were so enthusiastic about the program that they established two additional Reach Out and Read sites serving low income families in Hempstead and Wyandanch, New York. This program has distributed thousands of books to children, and we are seeking volunteers to read to our patients to supplement the book distribution program.
