ORGANIZATION: Literacy Volunteers of Central CT

The Central CT Family Literacy Center provides classes and support to help low literate mothers reach their goals. We need caring individuals willing to provide age appropriate activities in a safe, literacy-rich environment to young children while their mothers are in class. Please help break the cycle of low literacy!

Our programs take place in New Britain on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. We ask you to commit to at least 1 day a week. Program Hours are 9:30am-1:00pm.

We have 2 child-care rooms each with the capacity for 10 children. Children vary in age from 6 months- 3 years old. Each of our child-care rooms has a head teacher. Volunteers are needed as teacher assistants!

Position Statement

Literacy Volunteers of Central CT provides instruction, assistance and encouragement to those adult members of our community who want to improve their skills in reading, writing, or speaking English so that they can achieve their work, family, and community goals.

We recruit and train volunteers who tutor and also act as mentors for students that may need help with cultural or societal issues as well as language difficulties.

Description

Volunteers are trained to help adults reach their community, work, family, and education goals through English literacy. We serve over 360 students per year from New Britain/Middletown and surrounding towns.
