Program Goal: To increase the academic, social and health outcomes of homeless and at-risk children; spanning children from pre-school through middle school

Housed at Perspectives’ Family Center in St. Louis Park (one mile down the road from our housing campus is the site of our Kids Connection Program. This comprehensive "out of school program" is taught by five license teachers and over 50 trained volunteers. The program is operational 5 days/wk - 12 months/yr.

Components of the program are: Reach for the Stars - which provides elementary age children with extended-day academic enrichment. Kids Cafe - is a nutritional and culinary program that provides evening dinners that are prepared by the students under the direction of our full time Chef. Summer Explorers - provides summer school education and recreation throughout the summer months. Reading by 3 rd Grade - Guided reading is a vital part of a third grade reading program. It incorporates many learning tools - K - 3 rd grade reading worksheets, reading activities, reading games, reinforcement exercises, and assessments. Depending on grades - the reading program also includes: vocabulary development, reading comprehension, literature, writing strategies, and writing applications. Also studied are English language conventions, listening and speaking

We need interns to work with our At-Risk students from k-5th grade. This position can be multiple days per week. The supervisor will discuss details of internship needs. Internship goes from 7-20 hours per week.

  • Work with children in grades K-5th on social, cognitive and educational skills.
  • Work with children and teachers in the classroom on educational and social enrichment, in areas such as reading, math and computers.
  • Assist the chef and the students with culinary and social learning such as, preparing and cooking a meal, setting the tables.
  • Role modeling table manners and etiquette.
  • Volunteers and staff sit down with the children for a meal where they share in good food and conversation.
  • Volunteers assist in the clean-up of the program facility.

Qualifications:

  • Sensitivity to diverse cultures
  • Experience working with children
  • Creative and patient
  • Responsive to direction and feedback from supervisors
  • One semester requirement, school year encouraged
