A Matter of Balance emphasizes practical coping strategies to reduce concerns about falling. Trained facilitators conduct eight two-hour sessions designed for small groups. During the class, participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable and set realistic goals for increasing activity. They also find ways to change the environment to reduce fall risk factors and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance
Volunteer Guest speakers present topics that have a connection with fall prevention risk, usually for 30 - 60 minutes, once during each eight session class.
Examples of topics are listed below:
- Assistive devices
- How to get up from a fall safely
- Managing Blood Pressure
- The Importance of Proper Nutrition in Aging
- Medication Review and Medications that are Contraindicated during Aging
- How to Talk to Your Doctor
- How to Talk to Family Members
- Assertive Communication Verses Aggressive/Passive Communication
