Imagine being unable to read and understand a job application, instruction for medication, or even a bus schedule. That scenario is a daily reality for the staggering 69% of Cleveland residents who are functionally illiterate. But you can make a difference in their lives by becoming a tutor for Seeds of Literacy, a nonprofit organization providing free, one-to-one tutoring in basic education and GED preparation to adults in Cuyahoga County.
Tutors work individually with students to improve reading, writing and math skills, offer encouragement and support, and help students develop confidence and positive attitudes about learning. Tutors will also review any work done independently by the student and help to keep records of each student's progress.
All tutors are required to attend only one training session and class observation, after which they are asked to commit to attending at least one class session per week for one year. Class sessions are two hours long and are scheduled throughout the day to accommodate personal preference.
Our tutors have:
-Good reading, writing, and math skills
-Patience, promptness, and a sense of humor
The next tutor training session is scheduled for:
Saturday, February 25th, 2012 from 9 am-2 pm
Other training dates available:
Saturday, March 24th, 2012 from 9 am -2 pm
Saturday, April 21st, 2012 from 9 am - 2pm
With a steady influx of new students, our need for tutors is ever increasing. Every volunteer is appreciated, and no prior teaching experience is necessary--only the desire to help change someone's life.
