ORGANIZATION: Homeland Security Foundation of America

What is the Board? The HSFA Board of Directors is an elite, diverse group of members of the general public who help shape the future of the agency, providing governance, oversight, strategic vision and goals and conducting fundraising. This is an unpaid, volunteer position, representing the State of California. Who's eligible? HSFA is a public non-profit 501(c)(3) agency that serves all 435 US Congressional Districts. We serve the public and our Board of Directors membership must reflect the diverse population of the United States. You are eligible for nomination if you: Are over the age of 18 Have not been convicted of a felony Are able to participate in fundraising HSFA has a 100% board member participation requirement in fundraising. This means, if you are a board member, you must donate to the organization. There is no minimum, and the amount you give is kept in strict confidence between you and the Chairman of the board only. As an example of how this works; one board member may be able to contribute $5,000 a year, where another can only afford to donate $5; however, both will be considered to have met the 100% participation requirement. This allows us to apply for grants with a 100% board participation requirement. What about the Work? The work involves you attending and participating in ALL regular board meetings (from March - September, approx. 2 hrs each) and ALL committee meetings (year round approx. a few hours monthly; time commitment TBD by Committee Chairman). You will be assigned to a committee by the Chairman of the Board. See the "Committee Matrix" below. Think about the committees listed and please have a good idea of where you believe your knowledge skills and abilities will be best applied. This is a "working board"; some project participation / advisory actions may be required from time-to-time. You'll need to understand Robert's Rules of Order for regular board meetings and committee meetings. Based on your experience, you may be appointed to the prestigious position of Chairman of a Committee, e.g., Chairman of the Governance and Finance Committee. Be prepared to offer leadership and direction on that committee. Committees identify needs and present them to the board for consideration. Some Committees may conduct project design for the agency or provide oversight. You'll also need to be ready to get to know your committee members and work with your peers on the board. It always helps to gain support and co-sponsors for new resolutions to pass on the floor. Finally, you must be willing to participate in fundraising. This is a 2 part requirement. Participate in giving / donating to the organization. This helps us meet our 100% board participation requirement. The amount is not as important as the participation itself. This also helps us lead by example. It's difficult for us to encourage others to give to the agency if we are not willing to do so. Providing contacts / potential donors and doing the "ask" yourself whenever possible. This too is extremely important. Again, we must lead by example. So, What does "Elite" mean? The HSFA board is made up of 25 members; individuals who have the greatest passion for serving the public. These individuals have a genuine interest in public safety, energy and/or health and human services, and can think outside the box to craft and deliver real solutions that help Americans in every Congressional District be safe and live better. These few men and women from various backgrounds, whether school teacher, law enforcement officer, a farmer, CEO, Mayor, Governor, accountant, lawyer or any other profession, help make a mission critical, life-saving difference while working for HSFA and in their daily lives. This is why they are elite. Make no mistake about it, we cannot meet our goals without these talented, caring individuals, and that's why we need you to step up and join our mission. What's the most important thing(s) I need to know about this challenging, rewarding position? Do NOT use this public service opportunity as a "resume builder". Participate, participate, participate! If you are a board member, make all regular meetings and committee meetings and get involved in the debate. Recruit committee participants. Georgia state law stipulates that only board members may be committee members; however, members of the public may participate in any committee meeting as a guest to give testimony or on a regular basis. Non-members cannot vote, but they can add value to the debate and they can provide support, e.g., research, polling, etc. So, get others in your community involved as well. The more experienced hands we have on deck the better our service to the American public will be. Chairmen, build and Manage your Committee. Committees need members, they need to be able to participate and help make the team strong. Keep them engaged and keep your team well organized and focused. Debates are Great! Engage the work, engage the board, offer your views, vote independently, and do all you can to operate in the absolute best interest of the public. Your integrity and honesty is a valuable asset to the Board. We share a common strategy; we check our egos and any political, religious or self interest at the door on the way in -- we truly work for the public. Please respond here online AND send your resume and letter of interest regarding committee work directly to careers@hsfamerica.org, ATTN: Mary Jane Healy, Chief of Staff, HSFA. BE SURE TO INCLUDE A VALID PHONE NUMBER WHERE YOU CAN BE REACHED. Please review our website at http://www.hsfamerica.org for more information on the agency. We hope you find this opportunity a good match for you and we look forward to speaking with you soon.
