Advocates for children needed! Every year more than half a million abused and neglected children are part of a child welfare system that is complex, overburdened, and slow. Too many spend years moving from one temporary home to another. They have no family to call their own. They are more likely than other children to face homelessness, teen pregnancy, unemployment, even prison as adults.

CASA exists to ensure the abuse or neglect these children originally suffered at home doesn't continue at the hands of the system. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by the judge to gather information about the child and provide the court with reports and recommendations regarding the child's "best interests".

CASAs act as the eyes & ears of the judge - and the voice of the child. The goal: ensure the children move into a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible.

Thorough training is provided (40 hours over 6 weeks) evening and daytime training options are available. Every advocate is supervised and guided by an Advocate Manager. On average, advocates invest around 10 to 15 hours/month on their cases. A 2 year commitment (or, ideally, for the life of the case) is requested.

The process: go to CASA Lake County's website at www.casalakecounty.com and complete an application; we will then contact you to schedule a meeting to discuss the role in detail, answer questions, and identify next steps.

Note: if you follow up via VolunteerMatch, PLEASE include your phone number. Our reply emails are sometimes re-routed into spam and without a phone number we have no alternate way to follow up.

Mission Statement

CASA Lake County promotes and protects the best interest of children who have been abused or neglected, by training volunteers to advocate for them in the court, in schools, and in our community to help them find safe, permanent and loving homes.

Description

Imagine what it would be like to lose your parents because they can't - or won't - take care of you. Now, into your life come dozens of strangers: police, foster parents, social workers, and more. A CASA volunteer brings stability to a life that sorely needs it.

CASA Lake County is part of the nationwide network that is Court Appointed Special Advocates. You can learn more about National CASA at https://casaforchildren.org/

More than 280 volunteers serve nearly 500 children annually in Lake County, IL. Since its inception, CASA Lake County volunteers have helped thousands of children find safe, permanent homes.

Who are Our Advocates?

CASA empowers everyday citizens as appointed members of the court. Volunteers are teachers, business people, retirees, stay-at-home moms, grandparents, and more. Some work full time, others don't...but all are extraordinary people who want to make certain the voices of abused/neglected children are heard. Being a CASA volunteer does not require a specialized degree or legal experience. We provide all the training that's needed.
