Gateway to Peace Museum is a non-for-profit organization that has been operating free of charge in our community since 2001 as an educational museum teaching peacemaking skills to children in kindergarten through fifth grade. We aim to promote peaceful conflict resolution and nonviolence in our community using the child-focused approaches of Gandhi. GPM has created or adapted over 40 interactive "exhibits" or activities (including games, crafts, puzzles, demonstrations, murals, etc.) from which children learn peacemaking skills such as cooperation, communication, tolerance, appreciation for diversity and environmental stewardship.

Although we do share a small office space with a church in North County, we operate primarily by traveling wherever we are invited (primarily to schools, churches and other faith-based organizations, youth groups, after-school programs and other community organizations) with our truck and a 12-foot utility trailer containing the bulk of our activities. With school budgets for field trips shrinking and requests for Peace Museum events constantly increasing, running a mobile museum is the only way we can ensure these lessons of peacemaking and conflict resolution reach the children of our area.

Each GPM event requires hauling the trailer within the St. Louis Metro area as well as into other parts of Missouri and Illinois. Each event also requires a minimum of 2-3 Team Members to assist staff in setting up exhibits for an event (typically the evening before the event), to manage and direct children through the event as it occurs, and to assist with breaking down and packing up the event. If there is a shortage of Peace Guides at an event, Team Members may also be asked to fill in for that role (see Peace Guide description).

This year, GPM hopes to visit an average of 2-4 community groups per month, but we cannot accomplish this goal without a dedicated team of core volunteers, or Event Team Members.

Mission Statement

Gateway to Peace strives to enrich the lives of children through the pursuit of peace for all.

Description

Gateway to Peace Museum is a non-for-profit organization that has been operating free of charge in our community since 2001 as an educational museum teaching peacemaking skills to children in kindergarten through fifth grade. We aim to promote peaceful conflict resolution and nonviolence in our community using a child- and family-focused approach. We believe in enriching the lives of children through the pursuit of peace for all.

GPM brings its engaging and interactive activities - including puzzles, crafts, games, puppetry, weaving and more - to schools, camps, faith-based organizations and other community organizations throughout Missouri and Illinois. Each activity focuses on one of four topics that we believe are essential to building a peaceful world - Peace for Me (self-esteem and emotional skills), Peace for Us (cooperation and communication), Peace for Everyone (tolerance and diversity) and Peace for the Planet (environmental stewardship).

In 2009 alone, GPM shared its services with nearly 6,800 children in 16 schools and community organizations and partnered with The St. Louis Science Center, The Cooperating School Districts, and numerous community groups. This year, with the help of dedicated volunteers, we hope to reach an even greater number of children and adults in our community.
