Open Doors in the Bay Area - Teach Adults How to Read!

Low literacy is a much more common problem for adults in Houston than many people think. If you can't read, you're shut off from many of the simple pleasures - and basic rights - that readers often take for granted. Getting a driver's license... ordering from a menu... filling a prescription... completing a job application... enjoying a magazine... how would you do any of these if you couldn't read?

Reading provides options;
not being able to read closes doors.

Literacy Advance of Houston has been working for the last 50 years to open doors for Houstonians with low and limited English literacy, and we need your help!

Literacy Advance offers free English classes to adults in the Houston community and is always in need of volunteer tutors. You DON'T need prior teaching experience, and you DON'T need a second language! Literacy Advance provides all volunteer tutors with training, free of charge, and will assist you with ideas, advice and resources as you begin the exciting process of teaching another adult learn how to read.

A typical class will meet twice a week for 12 weeks, but if you're not able to give this much time, there are many other opportunities available - please let us know how much time you have to give, and we will fit in with you!

Literacy Advance provides multiple courses to suit the diverse needs of our students and volunteer tutors, including English as a Second Language (ESL) and Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs. ABE classes are for native English speakers who never learned to read or write properly and seek to increase their job readiness skills through improved literacy. These classes are generally taught one-on-one and target adults who need to develop functional and workplace literacy skills.
