Global Lifeworks is cooperating with AIDSvideos.org to make scientifically and medically accurate HIV/AIDS prevention education available for free online in many languages. We have some existing videos in Final Cut Studio format that need to be edited with Soundtrack Pro to (1) improve the audio quality and (2) add closed captions for the disabled so the videos are ready to be burned on DVDs for mass distribution.

To do this, you must have a legal copy of Final Cut Studio (including Soundtrack Pro) and know how to use it. Your Macintosh must have a working DVD reader/writer so you can read the data DVDs on which the projects have been saved and a writer so you can burn the edited project and return it to us. (Normally, Macintosh computers have a DVD drive that can both read and write DVDs built in.) We will send you blank DVDs or reimburse you for the cost of purchasing them yourself. You will need to sign and return a legal release granting Global Lifeworks the right to the finished video.

The highest priority is editing the soundtrack using Soundtrack Pro to reduce the modest amount of hiss, hum, and line noise as much as possible. (The audio tracks aren't horrible and are adequate as-is for YouTube today, but people watching on TVs have higher expectation for audio quality, so we want to clean up the files before burning them to DVDs.)

We would like to embed closed captions in as many of the videos as possible so they are accessible for the disabled and for non-native speakers of the video's language. For the English videos, we have caption files including timecodes that were generated by YouTube, so this should be straightforward. For videos in other languages, it would be necessary to create the timecode file, so this may not be feasible for video editors who lack knowledge of the target language. We will of course happily accept volunteers to do audio quality cleanup only (especially for non-English languages) since others can always add closed captions later.

You can work on as few or as many videos as you wish to--even just one. We will mail you a DVD with Final Cut Studio source project files and data for some videos. If you finish all the videos on that DVD and want to do more, we'll be happy to send you another DVD with more videos!

You can volunteer in this way from home on your own computer at your own pace! There is no minimum time commitment.

When you volunteer, you will be sent an email providing complete instructions on how you can get started right away.

Mission Statement

Global Lifeworks strives to stop the spread of HIV in our local communities through education and partnerships that focus both on HIV positive individuals and those at risk.

We accomplish our vision through prevention education, interactive forums, and partnering with other organizations dedicated to serving the medical and psychosocial needs of the HIV/AIDS community and those at risk. We offer seminars that examine belief systems and assumptions about who is infected by HIV and how they are treated in society. Finally, we build relationships and bridges between diverse communities to find new and unified ways of caring for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

We are particularly committed to:

  • Global and Local Health
  • Adolescents and Youth At Risk
  • The Value of Diversity
  • Community Transformation via Collaboration

Description

Global Lifeworks was birthed out of the relationship between an HIV/AIDS physician and her patient. Together, they explored the unique ways to address the lack of education and awareness of HIV/AIDS by disseminating accurate information regarding transmission and prevention, while meeting the medical and psychosocial needs of the HIV/AIDS community. Additionally, they addressed the stigma and assumptions inherent in the HIV/AIDS pandemic by offering a transformational workshop called Discovery which assists individuals in examining the belief systems that influence their assumptions about who is infected and how they are treated. Global Lifeworks believes that the solution to the HIV/AIDS pandemic is already available. This is a disease that is 100% preventable and treatable, though not curable. By integrating all of our available resources medically, psychosocially, spiritually, and economically, we can provide education regarding transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS while working together to enhance the health and wellness of both the HIV positive individual and their community. Today, Global Lifeworks activities include:

- Creating scientifically and medically accurate HIV/AIDS prevention educational videos in many languages that are given away for free online

- Doing live in-person educational seminars and workshops about HIV/AIDS prevention

- Annual Lifeworks Seminars in Bakersfield, California for transgender individuals and their partners

- A partnership with Stellenbosch Gemeente Church in South Africa to serve those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Kayamandi, a township of 25,000 people in South Africa
