Duties: Bereavement volunteers perform duties in the following areas:
- Attend the funeral or memorial services.
- Provide regular contact to caregivers by telephone calls or visits while patient is on hospice care and during the 13 months following the death as indicated in the individual plan of care.
- Assist the bereaved during the holidays, anniversaries and special occasions in a personalized way.
- Help plan and participate in the annual Memorial Service.
- Assist Bereavement Coordinator.
Qualifications: The volunteer must have patience, compassion, flexibility and good active listening skills are needed. Bereavement Volunteers need to be able to establish and maintain boundaries. The volunteer must be able to put the patient's interests first. Being well grounded and possessing good common sense are important.
