Wisdom of the Elders, Inc. (WISDOM), a Native American non profit corporation located in SE Portland, is seeking volunteers to help us transcribe a few recordings of Native elders. We have deadlines to complete transcriptions of a few video productions and so we are looking for someone who can help us within the next week or two. These recordings are very compelling stories from the heart of treasured Native American elders who are stepping forward to help younger generations with advise and wisdom. All of the recordings have been broken into one hour segments, so that a fast typist could complete one of these recording segments within 4-5 hours. This project is for the Discovering Our Story Project. We are developing culturally-tailored multi-media materials, including video productions and cultural teachings for our Portland Native American community. Our new website for this project is at www.discoveringourstory.org. You are welcome to take a look and then contact myself at rosehb@wisdomoftheelders.org or our Transcription Coordinator, Nicole Staudinger at nicole.staudinger@gmail.com . We are a close-knit group of individuals from diverse Native and non-Native cultures who welcome new people to our team. We hold potluck meetings in SE Portland once a month. However, the transcript volunteer work can be accomplished without attending meetings. Just check in with us and we can talk. WISDOM's mission is the preservation of Native Americans' rich heritage and traditional cultural arts. We record and preserve story, song and wisdom of exemplary storytellers, song carriers and other cultural artists and share their messages with native people, especially targeting youth. With our mission of race reconciliation, we also reach out to today's increasingly diverse multi-generational national public audience. We have produced 3 series of public radio programs, Wisdom of the Elders Radio which includes over 650 pages of educational curricula for k-12 schools in the categories of social studies, language arts, environmental science, and traditional arts (including storytelling, music and traditional northwest arts). It is all available at our website to educators, students and the public at no charge. We also formed the Northwest Indian Storytellers Association in 2005 and host annual NISA storytelling festivals in the Northwest, as well as the online speakers bureau, Turtle Island Storytellers Network. You're welcome to check out our website at www.wisdomoftheelders.org for more info along with three series of radio segments, over 650 pages of curriculum materials, and 75 tribal storytellers' web pages at Turtle Island Storytellers Network, our online speaker's bureau. Thanks again for considering our request.
