Volunteers help members of the international community learn English as a second language (ESL).
In the program, English students are divided into different level classes, and tutors teach level-appropriate materials.
Tutors help English language learners with new vocabulary, phrases, and conversation skills.
After observing classes and participating in a volunteer orientation/training workshop, tutors work with students for 1 1/2 - 2 hours a week.
The center offers daytime and evening classes.
Check out the GLA website!

**It is not necessary to speak a second language; all classes are taught in English.

Mission Statement
Greenville Literacy Association’s mission is to enrich our community by increasing the literacy and employability of our citizens.
Description
GLA was founded more than fifty years ago when a group of community leaders realized that there had to be solutions to the problem of adult under-education. Today the Association is one of the largest community-based literacy programs in South Carolina and one of the most highly developed in the nation. Hundreds of trained volunteer tutors and small group instructors are active in the agency's programs, literally changing lives in a very positive way. GLA serves the community through two earning centers in Greenville and Simpsonville, and through partnerships in Greer, West Greenville and the Berea area.
