Texas Hunger Initiative (THI) is a capacity-building collaborative project. The project seeks to develop and implement strategies to end hunger through policy, education, community organizing and community development. Their goal is to make Texas food secure by ensuring that every individual living in the state has access to three healthy meals a day, seven days a week by 2015.

In Texas 1.3 million people experience hunger daily. Almost 15% of all of its inhabitants are hungry or food insecure. Texas has the highest food insecurity rate among children in the nation. Many of the 3 million children in Texas who participate in the free lunch program through schools go without a meal on the weekends and when schools are closed for the summer.

The first step to alleviating hunger is to establish in every community Food Planning Associations (FPAs). FPAs will consist of community members interested in ending hunger in their communities. Each year FPAs will be focused on a specific goal and food security issue. FPAs meet as often as necessary, but at least monthly, and follow the Hunger Initiative strategic plan of making their community food secure.

Volunteers may serve:

  1. Food Planning Association - develop plan to achieve Food Security by 2015 and during summer 2011 feed more children.
  2. Food Service - prepare, transport, serve meals and deliver home food bags during the summer of 2011
  3. Activities - develop and present recreational and educational activities for children at service site in the summer 2011
  4. Assessment - determine and survey sites that provide meals/food for the hungry.

Mission Statement

The mission of RSVP:

RSVP has the dual purpose of engaging persons 55+ and older in volunteer service to meet critical community needs and to provide a high quality experience that will enrich the lives of the volunteers.

Description

RSVP was established in 1971 under the ACTION program, and has been operating in San Angelo and Abilene for numerous years under the local sponsorship of the West Texas Rehab Center. Part of the Corporation for National Service (CNS), RSVP exists nationwide, in order to engage the skills and energy of persons 55+ years (you don't need to be retired) to volunteer in the community.

RSVP Volunteers receive a free newsletter packed with local information, and free personal and excess liability and accident insurance. The personal and excess liability coverage is provided during your assigned volunteer duties. Volunteers are also invited to seasonal recognition events and parties. RSVP is free to join and is a great way to connect with the life of the city.

How do we do this? We partner with 120+ non-profit agencies in the locality, by annual agreement, allowing RSVP, as an umbrella organization, to offer a wide variety of volunteer opportunities and experiences to members.
