ORGANIZATION: Hayward Public Library - Hayward Public Library

Assist adults learning English as a second language in improving their conversational English skills in an informal, small group setting.

Volunteers host one class a week in-person at Josephine Lum Lodge, Weekes Branch Library, the Downtown Hayward Library or virtually. Volunteers fluent in Cantonese and/or Mandarin preferred for Josephine Lum Lodge.

Key Responsibilities: Plan and lead small group activities and discussions for adults learning English. Submit simple monthly reports on hours and participants. Maintain contact with Literacy Plus regarding needs, concerns, and any questions that may arise.

Requirements

  • The ability to communicate effectively and patiently with adults and seniors of all backgrounds, and library personnel.
  • Background Check
  • Orientation or Training
  • 1 Hour a Week
  • Min. 6 month commitment
  • Tutors must be 18 or older, speak English clearly. You do not need a teaching background to be an English Conversation Circle leader.
