Siena Literacy Center provides education support to adults in Detroit through volunteer tutors. In addition to tutoring, Siena is always looking for volunteers support in the following areas:

  • Evening reception desk help
  • Event planning & fundraising,
  • Social services
  • Legal Help, especially in family law, elder law, and contract law
  • Educational support in Special education,
  • Interpreters for French, Fulani, Wolof, Portuguese, and Arabic.
  • Social Media Management
  • Website Management

About Siena Literacy Center

Siena Literacy Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that works to improve the lives of families in northwest Metropolitan Detroit by providing a basic education program for adult students. Since opening in 1995, over 600 tutors have helped more than 2,000 students with their basic literacy skills. Through literacy and numeracy education, Siena enables our students to:

  • Balance a checkbook or track personal finances
  • Help their children and/or grandchildren with homework
  • Complete and understand lease agreements and other forms
  • Seek and understand reliable health-related materials
  • Prepare for entering advanced education and workforce training
  • Develop and build digital literacy skills necessary for navigating 21st-century life!

Mission Statement

Siena Literacy Center is a 501c3 non-profit organization that works to improve the lives of families in metropolitan Detroit by providing a basic adult education program and services with trained volunteers. We offer adult basic reading and math skills tutoring, basic computer skill classes, ESL (English as Second Language) tutoring, and study help with Citizenship interviews. Siena is also a certified provider of Northstar Digital Literacy. All of our services are FREE. Our learners are required to use the computer lab for a minimum of two hours weekly, two-hour weekly sessions with an assigned tutor, and one hour of homework/study time at home. Regular business hours are: Monday-Thursday from 10 am - 8 pm.

Since 1995, over 1,000 tutors have helped over 2,000 adult learners. Siena Literacy Center is looking for caring, patient, and flexible volunteer tutors.

  • Volunteer tutors are needed to teach reading, mathematics, and English as a Second Language.
  • Textbooks, Materials, training, and supplies are provided.

Learners in our programs are required to dedicate 5 hours weekly to their education, including 2 hours of tutoring time, 2 hours of the computer lab, and 1 hour of homework/study time.
