Horton's Kids, a well-respected D.C. educational nonprofit, is seeking an intern for our communications and development department. Horton's Kids provides programs for 138 children from the Wellington Park neighborhood in Anacostia. In addition to receiving tutoring from a volunteer three times a week and a field trip every weekend, children in our program receive other services designed to fill in the gaps such as meals, clothes, eye glasses, and dental care.
This position is a great fit for a student who is detail-oriented and wants to gain a greater understanding of a broad array of communications and development strategies and tactics. All of the projects that will be completed benefit many children and families living east of the river.
Responsibilities may include: · Preparing for our events, including Congressional outreach, logistics, and securing sponsors and RSVPs · Preparing for spring individual event with silent auction and online auction components · Helping thank everyone who helps Horton's Kids · Developing materials to better inform and communicate with donors, partners, and policymakers · Creating marketing materials · Researching media opportunities · Developing interactive features for the Horton's Kids web site · Writing and editing web site content · Researching potential corporate sponsors and preparing meeting materials · Assisting with program activities, such as tutoring and field trips (if scheduling and interest permits) Essential Experience and Competencies · Excellent oral and written communication skills · Ability to work independently · Flexibility with changing situationsSkills
