UlsterCorps Open House + Winter Wish List Drive
Monday January 18th, 10am-3pm, 292 Main Street, Rosendale. 481-0331.
Please join us for a special National Service Day Open House at our new Storefront for Service in Rosendale. Stop by to meet others dedicated to serving our community and learn about upcoming events, long and short term volunteer opportunities best suited to your availability, interests and skillsets, and how you can help. Queens Galley Soup Kitchen
Monday January 18th, 254 Washington Avenue, Kingston . Map
Volunteers needed to help preparing and serving meals at each of three shifts - 7-9am, 11am-1pm, and 4-6pm. Additional teams of 6-10 volunteers needed for two shifts for a post-Holiday cleanup, 9:30-11:30am and 11:30am-1:30pm. Projects include cleaning out a storage area, cataloging contents, putting items away and creating an office.RSVP or more info.

Rosendale Food Pantry

The Rosendale Food Pantry will be open from 9am-1pm Martin Luther King Jr National Service Day. Stop by to drop off a donation from their wish list or to get more information about volunteering. The pantry is currently seeking three new long-term volunteers. More info.

Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary
Monday January 18th, 2010, 11am-5pm

Volunteers of all ages needed to assist with a Mid Winter Cleaning at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. We'll be cleaning our two biggest barns, the pig barn and the goat and sheep barn, and hanging out with residents of these and other barns. The event is very family friendly - but please let us know the number of adults and children in your group. All children must be supervised by an adult. More info.

Pine Hill Area Community Supper and Food Giveaway
Monday January 18th, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm; Free. Pine Hill Community Center, 287 Main Street, Pine Hill. 254-5469.
Occurs every 2 weeks on Monday. All are welcome to the community meal; take home food if you need it, no questions asked. Potential volunteers can contact Eve or David Smith at 845-254-5304. More info.

SERVICE EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE WEEK

RSVP "Items of Warmth" collection/SUNY Ulster Continuing Education Open House
The cold winter months can be a difficult time for many of our friends and neighbors. As part of the Martin Luther King Day of Service 2010, RSVP will gather items such as coats, hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, etc. for all ages. From now until January 14th you may drop off your new or gently used items to the RSVP offices at the Business Resource Center, just off Ulster Avenue, 1 Development Court, Kingston, NY. More info.

An overview of the Ulster County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Shelter's mission and how you can help, working with cats and dogs and other animals in need. Topics include a tour of the Shelter, dog-walking for shelter dogs, humane education and school programs, and fundraising event planning. Tree Chipping for the Community

In honor of MLK Day of Service, The City of Kingston, Kingston School District, and Friends of Forsyth Nature Center will be hosting it's annual Winterfest on January 16, 2010. The highlight of the event will be the chipping of almost 2,000 City of Kingston Christmas trees, of which the mulch will be used in the 2010 Learn and Serve America School Garden Program. This mulch will be used to help schools plant food for those in need in our community. Winterfest will take place on January 16th, 2010, from 10am-2pm at Hasbrouck Park in Kingston, NY. This event will also feature free snowshoeing, children's crafts, snow-related activities and great food. In order to mulch 2,000 trees we need at least 30 volunteers and can range from 6 years-90! Habitat for Humanity, Newburgh

152 Washington Street, Newburgh will be a new home for a local, working family in need at the former site of "Big Mamma's Soul Food Kitchen", which had been abandoned and boarded up for over 20 years. Caring Hands Soup Kitchen
Tuesday-Friday January 19th-22nd, 10am-1pm
Clinton Avenue United Methodist Church, 122 Clinton Avenue, Kingston
The soup kitchen is closed Monday in honor of MLK Day, but volunteers are needed throughout the week and beyond to help serve lunch weekdays. Please arrive at 10am; meals are served at noon and clean-up is completed by 1pm. 331-7188.

This year, we have recognized four community residents (one posthumously) for our Community Achievers Awards. We believe they reflect the spirit of Dr. King's efforts. They are: William R. Vincent (deceased), scientist, philanthropist; Elder Donald O. Waters, Sr., prison evangelist; Carleton Mabee, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Hudson Valley historian; and Dr. Paula C. Childs, founder, The King's Kids Early Childhood Development Center. Our keynote speaker will be Rev. Faye Taylor Banks, pastor, St. Mark's AME Church, Kingston. More info.
