Community Cats Maryland holds monthly spay/neuter clinics at BARCS (the city shelter in South Baltimore) for feral cats. These cats are captured by their caretakers in humane traps, brought to BARCS to be spayed/neutered/vaccinated, and then released back where they were trapped to live out their lives under the watchful eyes of their human caretakers. This process, known as trap-neuter-return, helps to keep feral cat populations under control in a humane fashion, and also diminishes nuisance behaviors that are associated with free-roaming unaltered cats.
We rely heavily on volunteers to help get set up for the clinic and care for the cats while they stay with us. Volunteers with vet-tech-type skills are always helpful, but no special skills are required -- we have jobs for all skill levels!
Clinics take place over the course of a weekend, although volunteers are sometimes needed the following Monday as well.
Volunteers can help with:
- Clinic set-up - moving and setting up tables upon which we put the traps, organizing supplies, helping with check-in process.
- Feeding the cats and cleaning their traps
- Photographing cats for identification purposes
- Cleaning the cats' ears and administering topical medications while the cats are under anesthesia.
- Checking the cats out to their caretakers at the conclusion of the clinic
- Breaking down the clinic and cleaning up
We have jobs that are hands-on and vet-tech-y, and jobs that are far away from any possibility of seeing blood or poop. :-) These clinics are the backbone of our organization, and we're always looking for more dedicated volunteers to keep the clinics running smoothly.
