Big City Mountaineers BCM aims to instill critical life skills in under-resourced urban youth through transformative wilderness mentoring expeditions. Our powerful 1:1 mentored wilderness expeditions connect caring adult volunteers with youth in need of guidance to improve integrity, self-esteem, responsibility, decision-making abilities and communication skills. BCM’s core program is a single gender, professionally guided weeklong wilderness expedition (backpacking or canoeing) with a 1:1 ratio of 5 teens to 5 adult mentors. In addition to the expedition, groups participate in single day and overnight experiences pre- and post- expedition to help develop trust, skills, and transform learning from the backcountry to their urban lives. . It is our caring volunteer mentors and instructors that drive this program and help our youth recognize who they are and what they can accomplish. "This experience was easily the best I've had in life...none of the mountains I've climbed or the rivers I've kayaked have given me as much satisfaction as this."-BCM Volunteer. Mission Statement

The mission of Big City Mountaineers is to instills critical life skills in under-served urban youth through transformative wilderness mentoring expeditions.

Description

Big City Mountaineers delivers its life-changing youth programs in 4 major ubran regions throughout the country (Denver-Metro, San Francisco Bay Area, Portland, and the Midwest - Chicago and Minneapolis). Taking place primarily in the summer months, its core program is a week-long, single-gender backpacking or canoeing expedition with a 1:1 ratio of 5 teens to 4 or 5 adults. Working with community-based youth agencies and caring adults who act as mentors in the field, our professionally guided programs improve integrity, self-esteem, responsibility, decision-making abilities and communication skills. BCM results show that youth return to their urban homes with the motivation and purpose to make positive changes in their lives including staying in school and avoiding drugs and delinquency.

In 2011, Big City Mountaineers delivered single-day, overnight and weeklong programs throughout its four regions. Over 300 volunteers logged more than 23,000 hours in the field, and in partnership with two-dozen youth agencies, changed the lives and instilled critical life skills in nearly 1,000 under-served young people.

In 2012, Big City Mountaineers hopes to nearly double the number of young people they serve through their mentoring expeditions.
