Every year, children from around Virginia and around the world participate in Destination ImagiNation. Whether through their school, their church, their neighborhood or even their scout troop, teams from 5-7 members choose one of 5 challenges to solve using creativity and imagination. The culmination of their season are the Regional Tournaments, held in February or March of each year, where they compete for the right to represent the region at the State level Tournament in April. This tournament cannot happen without the dedication of many volunteers. Each regional board works hard all year to train Team Managers and teams and prepare for their tournaments. What we are looking for are volunteers to help on Tournament day to Appraise the children's solutions. This involves watching their performances, assessing them according to a predeterimined set of subjective and objective areas. It is only one full day PLUS a few hours of training a few weeks earlier, but the fun and excitement you experience could fill up many more!

1. Appraisers’ Training: Feb. 6 from approximately 9am-1:30pm (details to come.) Will take place at John Handley High School in Winchester, VA. The Snow Date is Feb. 13 from 9am-1:30pm at John Handley High School.

2. DI Tournament: March 5, 2016 will take place at John Handley High School.

People who volunteer with DI have their lives transformed by the experience. It truly is a unique event and a wonderful way to give your time.

Description

Destination Imagination (DI) is a volunteer-led nonprofit organization whose purpose is to inspire and equip students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders. Annually, we offer seven new standards-based Challenges in STEM, Improv, Visual Arts, Service Learning and Early Learning. Each Challenge is open-ended and enables students to learn and experience the creative process from imagination to innovation while fostering their creativity, courage and curiosity. Academic tournaments take place around the world where teams have the opportunity to present their solutions to trained appraisers. Students have fun and gain confidence in their ability to solve any challenge. In working to solve our Challenges, teams learn 21st century skills (creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, citizenship and courage), step outside of their comfort zones to pursue ideas and make presentations, and build on their unique strengths.
