Advisor to middle school "Heroes on Stamps" group

Description

Adults (age 50+) will work in small group settings with 3-4 middle school students to select, research, and present a creative project about a US hero who has been featured on a postage stamp, using on-line resources from the Smithsonian Museum's database.

Groups will meet at several Montgomery County public middle schools in Spring 2010, working one hour per week for eight weeks. Adults will serve as project advisors, helping their student group conduct research, choose a presentation method (skit, poster board, video, other), and complete the group project. A teacher at each participating school will serve as overall program coordinator. Schools are still being selected but will include locations throughout the county.

This "Heroes on Stamps" program culminates in a gala event at the Smithsonian Postal Museum where student/adult groups present their projects and celebrate learning together, in early June.

Skills

  • Enjoy teens; stamp collectors welcome: No particular skill set is needed -- but adults who enjoy working with energetic, young adolescents will be best suited to this program. Groups will meet weekly for one hour, over an 8-week period in April - May 2010, on site at schools immediately after school (generally 2:30-3:45 on a particular day, which will vary depending on school location)
