What we do... Health Services volunteers provide the following to disaster affected clients:
- Evaluate health status and healthcare needs
- Provide first aid, replacement medication and health supplies
- Refer families to healthcare resources and services
- Supply Health Services personnel to various sites such as shelters and service centers for client care
- Provide disaster-specific health promotions and disease prevention education
- Provide surveillance data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
- Collaborate with Local Public Health Authorities in:
- Care of special needs clients
- environmental concerns
- Contagious disease control/reporting
- Follow up with clients after disaster relief operations close
Assignment Settings... Depending on their expertise and experience, Red Cross Health Services volunteers work mainly in the following settings:
- Either on site or by telephone providing services to people affected by house/apartment fire as an integral member of a Disaster Action Team (rotating on-call shifts)
- Red Cross Shelters where those affected by disaster take temporary shelter for their basic needs of daily living. These can be in the Twin Cities area or in other parts of the state or country depending on where the disaster has taken place. (you can specify your availability to travel and your availability)
- Red Cross Service Centers where clients go to interview with caseworkers
- Red Cross Staff Health where RNs/Physicians have responsibility for the health and well-being of Red Cross staff
