Register file photo

The Monmouth County Archives has a large collection of negatives from the defunct newspaper, Red Bank Register, primarily from 1971 to 1987. Several different opportunities are available. On-site and at home volunteers are sought to help index the negatives in a PastPerfect database by locating information about the photographs in issues of the newspaper where many of them were published with detailed captions. Volunteers can work on site or off site. Captions will enhance the index to the negatives by providing names of people in the photos, photographers, and other information about the negatives, which are arranged chronologically in sleeves that have only very short identifications. Volunteers also may work on other aspects of the project in order to preserve and catalog the negatives. Through working on this project, volunteers will learn much about local history and, if working on-site, how to use PastPerfect, a computer program used by many archives and museums. Volunteers with PhotoShop experience also needed to enhance scanned newspaper photos to be used to attach images to the database entries. Other volunteer projects also available, such as locating information about Building Contract notices in the Red Bank Register newspaper, which is available online, and cataloging other photo collections. The Archives is on the lower level of the Monmouth County Library Headquarters and is open for research Monday-Friday, 9 to 4. Background check will be made for volunteers working onsite. Onsite volunteers also must complete two computer-based training modules.
