Instruct refugees and immigrants in their pursuit of the English Language. Prior teaching experience is not necessary. Classes operate Monday through Thursday, morning( 9:30 - 11:30am) and evening (6 -8 p.m.), according to the MNPS calendar. Volunteers should plan to commit to at least 1 class session each week for at least one 9 weeks session (approximately 3 hours a week).
Teachers lead classes, of no more than 20 students. A curriculum, with a teacher’s manual, lesson objectives, and suggested materials, is provided. Although teachers follow the curriculum, they are expected to plan their own lessons based on the needs of their students and the lesson objectives. Teachers spend about 45 minutes planning each lesson, two hours teaching, and 15 minutes recording what the students learned. Teachers are supported through orientation, training, and on-going assistance with lesson-planning/preparation. Teachers have the option of teaching a twice-weekly class by themselves or co-teaching for a once a week commitment.
