Purpose:

To provide visitors with information that will enrich their visit to the Eudora Welty House and Garden (EWHG) and to Mississippi. This information shall educate the public about the life, work, and surroundings of Welty - one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. The Eudora Welty House and Garden is under the purview of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

Volunteers will operate basic audio/visual equipment for visitors (training provided), escort group to the area where tour will begin and explain Museum guidelines, and conduct guided tour of House and Garden.

Mission Statement

Through the use of the home and contents of the internationally recognized Pulitzer Prize winning writer Eudora Welty, the Welty Collection, and educational programming, the Eudora Welty House and Garden shall educate the public about the importance of Welty's literary legacy thereby encouraging the love of reading and literature in others, developing an appreciation of the arts, and inspiring the creative endeavors of future artists and writers.

Description

The Eudora Welty House and Garden is a National Historic Landmark and one of the nation's most intact literary house museums, reflecting Welty's life there over seventy-six years. Welty left her house and collection of thousands of books to the state, and the Welty family donated furniture and art. Visitors will see Welty's house as she lived in it.The Department of Archives and History has overseen the transition from private residence to historic site.
