Group Tour Docent or Gallery Docent

Description

Serve as an interactive tour docent for school tours (grades 4 through HS), families, seniors and community groups, leading groups through our exhibits and galleries during weekday mornings Tues - Fri.

Gallery (or stationary) docents serve in gallery areas engaging non-tour visitors. Gallery Docents are needed Thursday (12pm-7:00pm), Friday (11am-4pm), and Weekends (11am-4pm).

Group Tour Docents will guide visitors (families and other small walk-in groups) through the galleries on the weekends.

Skills

  • Tour Docents 12.5 hours of mandatory classroom training presented in seven separate sessions in Japanese American culture is designed to familiarize the docent with the story and history of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Hours include training in visitor services and the improving of communication skills within this cultural environment. An additional 20 hours is required as part of the Museum mentoring program. Mentoring enables docent trainees to receive one-on-one instruction on history, culture, politics, arts and other issues pertinent to the Japanese American community. Communication and interpersonal skills are a must. Docents are to be interactive with visitors. www.janm.org for more information on the volunteer program.
