The Foster Grandparent Program has paid (stipend) volunteer opportunities for seniors who are at least 55 years old and lower income who would like to work with children in a school, Head Start or facility setting. The stipend FGP volunteer is trained and then placed at a school, Head Start or facility where there are children or youth who need a little extra help completing their daily learning tasks. In return, the FGP volunteer receives a federal stipend that, by law, can not be counted as income by any local, state or federal entity. If the applicant meets the eligibility guidelines, the FGP program pays for the applicant's physical, Child Abuse History Clearance and Criminal History Clearance. Foster Grandparent Program volunteers "work" twenty (20) to forty (40) hours/week.

The Foster Grandparent Program has been in Erie County since 1966. The Foster Grandparent Program (FGP) is funded, in part, by the Corporation for National and Community Service. FGP is part of the Senior Service Corps and is sponsored in Erie County by the Greater Erie Community Action Committee (GECAC).
