OAK LAWN, HOPE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL LOCATION: This rewarding position as an Open Heart Magic Hospital Magician volunteer will allow you to learn and use close-up magic to empower kids and teens at their hospital bedsides at the critical time of when they're working to battle their illness and get better and need the hope, energy and laughter than magic can provide. After you create magic with the patient and their families, you will also teach magic one-on-one and leave them with the special supplies to perform the trick and a "Secret Lesson" with additional magic they can learn to continue the interaction after you leave and having something else to do the rest of their stay. You will visit kids and teens ages four to young adult in pediatrics as well as PICU and other areas at Hope Children's Hospital, one of our long standing and strongerst hospital partners and a team of hospital staff that loves the OHM Magic Program.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO KNOW MAGIC but you must be willing and committed to learning the techniques and routines to create this exciting engagement of magic for kids and their families. We'll teach you everything. We will train you on a weekly basis (one fixed evening a week for the group plus your personal time for practice.) The introductory training will last 12 weeks, once a week, and will cover sleight of hand, performance practice, fundamentals of strong close-up magic, empowering kids, adapting magic to medical situations so everyone can be a part, etc. and at the end, the experience will create a confident Hospital Magician able to perform and adapt to any situation in the medical environment.

Do know that we're not clowns nor child party magicians in funny vests and over sized sunglasses. The basis of this service is the use of close-up magic but we use self-deprecating humor to increase rapport and make kids laugh so if you're not able to laugh at yourself or do not have a sense of humor, then please do not apply.

TIMES OF SERVICE & PARTNER HOSPITAL LOCATIONS WHERE WE'RE LOOKING FOR ADDITIONAL PEOPLE:

We're growing the following programs and are looking for 1-3 new individuals in Oak Lawn:

• Hope Children's Hospital, Oak Lawn (Monday or Thurs: days or evenings (evenings starting at 5:30 or day spots if you're available))

If you travel often or can't control when you'll be in town, then this unfortunately is probably not a position for you. Each visit to the hospital will last an average of two hours.

(NEW TIME FRAME) WE'VE SCHEDULED THE NEXT TRAINING to start in Jan/Feb of 2010. The sessions are weekly, will start at 6PM, last a couple hours, and be located downtown Chicago or at a mid-point between Oak Lawn and Park Ridge on Wednesday evenings. Do note that the group will have two evaluations during training. The first is on the actual routines used with kids, the second is the final evaluation to test adaptation techniques,working in a hospital patients room, etc. which is done through simulating a visit to a hospital. Again, after you've passed both,you'll be confident that you'll be able to work successfully with kids.

ON-GOING REQUIREMENTS - OHM QUARTERLY MEETINGS AFTER TRAINING are scheduled for the first Wednesday evening of Feb, May, Aug and Sept at 6PM in downtown Chicago. After training, you will be required to attend these for new info, new methods and supply pickup of Secret Lessons, tricks to teach the kids and supplies for performance.
