What is WaterFire?
WaterFire is a work of art involving movement, participation and surprise.
It has sparked the imaginations of millions of people over the past 14 years and ignited a renaissance for Providence, Rhode Island. WaterFire seems to happen like magic - the sun sets and the braziers burst into flame as the music floats across the water. But magic is hard work and few people realize how much effort goes into creating WaterFire or how complex the task actually is. For each event as many as 250 people (staff and volunteers) work hard to create WaterFire. They dress in black so they can disappear into the night like magicians, but without their hard work the magic of WaterFire would never appear.
What do volunteers and interns do for WaterFire?
Volunteers and interns are essential for the production of each WaterFire. Whatever the task at hand, from fundraising and planning events to piloting boats to feeding the fires, to being a WaterFire Ambassador of Light, and selling WaterFire merchandise, our volunteers and interns do almost everything. On event days, volunteers and interns work in different shifts from morning through the entire event and clean-up late at night. We welcome and encourage everyone - of all ages and abilities - to join us. Friends, family members, co-workers, and small groups are also welcomed to volunteer together.
Is training provided?
Yes. Our Volunteer Orientations will teach you everything you need to know about WaterFire volunteering and give you a chance to meet some people who work behind the scenes. Volunteers are eligible for many extra benefits including invitations to local events, parties and barbeques, and even fun trips.
Is there a time commitment?
Yes. Volunteers sign up to participate in a specific number of WaterFire events over the course of the season. Interns work the hours required by their school or university and generally by the semester. We find that volunteers and interns love WaterFire so much that they give more hours than those for which they originally signed up for.
How to contact:
We are actively recruiting volunteers and interns for the upcoming season, so please contact us now so that you can be scheduled to attend our next Volunteer Orientation. Description
WaterFire Providence Brings Art to the Community, by the Community
WaterFire Providence is known for the lightings that take place downtown with local artists and food vendors. We hope to get back to lightings downtown later this year but for now our main focus is the WaterFire Arts Center (WFAC)! Since the pandemic WaterFire continued to create art for the community, by the community at the WFAC.
WaterFire Providence Volunteers are an integral part of every event we host. They assist in all aspects of event production, special projects, and anything else we dream up.
Volunteers build, perform, inspire, engage, and enjoy! WaterFire volunteers come from all walks of life, and we appreciate the diversity and talents that are among them. Over the years, a network of volunteers has been established, and we are delighted at the community that they have become.
