Americana Community Center is looking for an Art Education Intern to work in a diverse multicultural setting to provide enrichment activities for the after school youth programs. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow professionally as you make a difference in the lives of youth.

Position Available: Fall and/or Spring Semesters, summer opportunities also available

Hours: availability between Monday-Thursday, 4:30pm-6:30pm

Compensation: Unpaid

Internship Summary

In the After School Program, refugee, immigrant and U.S. born youth come for ESL (English as a Second language) classes and/or tutoring for homework and reading. Upon finishing classes, homework, or designated reading time students then have the option to attend a number of enrichment activities. These activities range depending on the day and number of volunteers. Activity time is approximately 45 minutes long. The Art Education Intern will be responsible for leading foundational art instruction to children, such as drawing, painting, color theory, sculpture and design. The main function of the Art Education Intern is to support children in developing artistic skills in several mediums, in order to supplement a possible lack of instruction in their school environment. The ultimate goal of the Art Education Intern position is to lend support for children in learning foundational art techniques, which may ultimately lead to increased self-efficacy, confidence, and improved academic and behavioral performance.

Specific Duties :

Manage Art Room by promoting academic achievement and self-sufficiency through acquisition of basic art skills and appropriate behavior.

Develop age-appropriate projects and activities that teach foundational art techniques, such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, etc. on a minimal budget.

Prepare and implement daily Art activities that engage youth ages 6-17, while regarding sensitivity to all cultures, age groups and abilities.

Integrate Youth Program volunteers into Art activities.

Help maintain orderliness and cleanliness of Art Room.

Bring any technical problems to the attention of the Art Program Coordinator or Youth Program Coordinator.

Provide frequent updates and occasional reports on academic and behavioral progress or concerns to the Art or Youth Program Coordinator.

Assist in the implementation of the discipline protocol in the Art Room.

Other duties as assigned.
