The harsh truth is 66% of adults in Cleveland are functionally illiterate, and nearly 25% of adult Cleveland residents don’t have a high school credential or GED. Strengthening adult education is vital to improving our community, and you can help make a crucial difference by joining Seeds of Literacy’s Program Planning & Impact Committee.
Seeds of Literacy offers free GED preparation and basic education to more than 1,000 adult students per year, making us larger than the average high school. By volunteering to evaluate our education goals and measure our effectiveness, you’ll be keeping the county’s only nationally accredited adult education program at the top of its field.
In the last year, Seeds of Literacy overhauled our entire curriculum to meet the standards of the new 2014 GED exam. Current committee projects include evaluating and redesigning our student orientation and intake process to increase our students’ engagement and retention. As literacy includes an array of skills vital to daily life, we’re also working to expand our curriculum to include financial literacy, health information literacy, and digital literacy.
This committee would best fit individuals with an education or program development background, but any instruction or curriculum experience may be helpful. We also welcome fresh perspectives from different fields. The committee meets monthly, in person or by phone.

Seeds of Literacy provides personal education that empowers adults to succeed in their communities.
Description
Seeds of Literacy brings together people of diverse backgrounds in order to help break a root cause of poverty: illiteracy.
Since 1997, Seeds of Literacy has provided free, one-to-one tutoring in basic education and GED preparation to adults in Cuyahoga County. A unique curriculum designed and developed by Seeds of Literacy and one-to-one tutoring optimize learning by building relationships of trust between the student and the tutor. Since this approach allows each student to work at her or his own pace and academic level while receiving personal attention and encouragement, students of all academic levels may be able to participate in the program.
Seeds has student retention and graduation rates that are twice the national average, is the only adult literacy program in the county to be nationally accredited by ProLiteracy, and is a 501(c)3 organization.
