Are you interested in making a difference in not only a young person's life, but your own? Shepherds is looking to pair Adult Male and Female Mentors with incoming Freshmen at our partnership schools located in the Bridgeport and greater New Haven areas. Mentors work one-on-one with Shepherds' students from inner city Connecticut neighborhoods, providing guidance, direction and support over the four years of high school. Sharing six seemingly simple words "I know you can do it!", Mentors served as role models, filling a void in these young people's lives. In neighborhoods where 1 out of every 4 students becomes a dropout statistic, Shepherds has a proven track record of success. 100% of the students who have completed the program have graduated high school with a college acceptance in hand and plenty of secured financial aid to be able to attend. With Mentors by their side, those six words - "I know I can do it!" now resound in more young people's voices.

Mission Statement

Shepherds' mission is to decrease the achievement gap and increase the high school graduation rate in Connecticut's inner cities. We do this by providing youth who are at-risk - academically, financially and emotionally - with a quality, college preparatory high school education and the introduction of a positive role model, a Mentor, who fills a void in their lives throughout their four years of high school.

Description

The Shepherds program addresses the emotional and financial needs of low income, inner city students by giving them the adequate resources needed to succeed.

First - Tuition support - Shepherds Inc. pays for the majority of our students’ tuition at a private, college preparatory level high school, which allows them access to the small class size and one-on-one teacher support they need.

Second -College Prep - Upon enrollment, our students come to us two to three grade levels behind their peers in math and reading. Our mission is to help them overcome these handicaps. We do do this through an extensive college prep program, which consists of: 1. Intensive STEM achievement camps which focus on boosting their reading comprehension and math skills 2. Study, organizational skills and social skills workshops 3. Tailored online academic help 4. Intensive SAT prep 5. Financial literacy workshops 6. Career days at Fortune 500 headquarters and smaller companies to expose them to a wide spectrum of career ideas and possibilities 7. Cultural enrichment activities 8. College visits and fairs.

Third-Mentoring - A Mentor-Mentee relationship is established at the beginning of each student’s freshman year. Our mentors are the backbone of our program because they provide the emotional support for the typical adolescent struggles of academic and social pressures and serve as a role model to our students.
