All Theatre Volunteers should be passionate about Theatre, Performing, and Storytelling. Lots of energy and enthusiasm is a must!

Mission Statement

The Children's Museum of Maine exists to inspire discovery and imagination through exploration and play.
The Museum serves as an indispensable resource for families and educators, helping to create a broad community devoted to our children's development and learning.

Description

The Children's Museum of Maine is a hands-on, interactive learning environment designed for children 1-10 years old. The museum offers exhibits and programs focused on early childhood, science and multicultural education to more than 100,000 visitors per year. The Children's Museum of Maine was ranked 14th in the nation by Child Magazine.

Nearly fifty individual volunteers contribute over 2,000 hours a year - they lead programs, assist our educators, and most importantly, play! The Museum also welcomes groups of all ages for one-time projects or ongoing efforts.

Three floors of exhibits allow plenty of room to explore and discover. Discover Our Town on our first floor, where kids can play dozens of different roles in our mini-community. They can save the day in our fire truck, milk a cow or count eggs in our farm, shop for healthy foods at the market, or pull in the catch of the day on our lobster boat. Our first floor also features a toddler park for our youngest visitors, and a revolving exhibit. Our "Attack of the Bloodsuckers!" exhibit here until December 2008 - you and the kids will learn a lot about what's eating you!

On the second floor, visit the Discovery Woods exhibit, where kids can climb Mt. Kid-ta-din, pack-a-backpack, build their own shelter, make a splash in Cascade Stream, visit the Ranger Station, and identify leaves and animals found in the Maine woods. The We Are Maine exhibit is a hands-on encounter designed to foster an understanding and appreciation of Maine's diverse communities. Our domed space shuttle is equipped with space suits and guided star shows led by our educators.

Downstairs, imagination reigns! Kids can try out our working puppet theatre, or get into dress-up costumes and tell their story on our stage - with curtains, sound effects, and working flood lights! After the show, they can stop by Coco's Diner, where they can scoop some play ice cream or try out the pretend milkshake machine!

In the warmer months, our backyard is open, featuring oversize instruments, a castle... and a HUGE pirate ship with a working brig!

Inquire at the front desk about guided tours of our Camera Obscura. Visitors old and young will marvel at this exhibit, which offers a panoramic view of the city - from inside a room with no windows!
