Who:
Teach English to adult newcomers from Mexico, Central America, Asia, and all over the world. You do not need to be bilingual. (However, please let us know if you have language skills that could be helpful.)

What:

Our student-centered classes emphasize participatory language learning. Help students set goals and develop English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in pursuit of these goals.

When:
Monday-Thursday, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Monday-Thursday, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm (assistant teacher in morning preliteracy class)

Commitment: Teach two hours per week for at least one semester (approx. 16 weeks)

How to Apply: Please attend ONE orientation session: August 5, 6, OR 11, from 6 to 7:00pm. RSVPs are greatly appreciated.

After orientation, tutors begin their service with a comprehensive training designed to provide a toolkit of reading/writing and language learning strategies to apply in class with Durham Literacy Center students. Training is mandatory. The fall semester dates are: August 18 & 20 from 6-9pm, AND August 23 from 9-3pm. (If one of these dates cannot be attended, we can work with you to reschdule.)

Description

The DLC provides direct individual and small group instruction in reading, writing, English language, and computer skills to adults and families seeking to improve their education and/or move toward economic self-suffiency. We partner with a number of social service, health, education, and workforce-related organizations and agencies to meet the diverse needs of the Durham community.
