Volunteers receive entry to the Ohio State Fair, a parking pass, and a commemorative shirt and hat.
An improved kayak pond and kayaks made of recycled materials will return for a eighth year to the Ohio State Fair which runs Wednesday, July 26 through Sunday, August 6. Aimed at introducing youth to the excitement of paddle sports, the kayak pond will once again be the centerpiece of the Natural Resources Park.
Kids age 18 and younger are encouraged to visit the 7,200 square foot pond, located behind the Smokey Bear exhibit near the southeast corner of the Ohio Expo Center. Kayaks and lifejackets will be provided free of charge for participants who can paddle in the pond for a brief time under the supervision and instruction of watercraft professionals. A signed waiver is required for participation.
Participants first must check in at the Kayak Pond Registration located in the northeast corner of the pavilion in the Natural Resources Park behind the Amphitheater. At the Kayak Pond Registration, participants must sign a waiver and will be assigned a starting time. After registering, participants can head over to the east side of the Kayak Pond at their designated time where they will hear a safety talk regarding the importance of safe kayak operation, three points of contact, and the wearing of a life jacket. They will also be fitted for a life jacket before trying their hand at kayaking. Families will also have the opportunity to take keepsake photos.
